Spotlight on OPIC’s Impact Award in the critical infrastructure category

During the inaugural OPIC Impact Awards event on March 11 we will be honoring eight winners across six categories, including Renewable Resources, Critical Infrastructure, Access to Finance, Development Impact, Private Equity and American Small Business. Each of our awardees was selected through a rigorous process considering each project’s focus in priority sectors or regions, innovation in overcoming difficulties, quality of results, risk mitigation practice, development impact, and other factors, such as serving as a model in project development and execution.

Critical Infrastructure is the second in our series of spotlights on categories OPIC will award during the event. OPIC and its partners catalyze investments in critical infrastructure – primarily in the water, energy and transportation sectors – to provide a base for much needed economic growth and opportunity.

While a focus on advancing infrastructure defines a large part of OPIC’s support, Critical Infrastructure projects specifically unlock the potential of an emerging region by paving the way for future development to take root and grow. Infrastructure like roads and water treatment facilities and power plants form the foundation for a modern society and impact almost everything from growing and transporting food to starting small businesses and providing quality healthcare.

Critical infrastructure projects tend to be complex, but highly visible. OPIC loans and guarantees for transactions strengthen the physical and financial infrastructure for developing nations, which encourages other investors to follow. The Critical Infrastructure Award winner represents the qualities OPIC most looks for in this sector.
