Bridge International Academies, a low-cost network of schools in Kenya that is expanding with the support of OPIC financing, has been named one of the Social Entrepreneurs of the Year for 2014 by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.

Bridge’s innovative model offers high-quality education for less than $6 per student, per month to thousands of children in hundreds of schools constructed across Kenya, largely in rural areas. With the help of a $10 million OPIC loan, Bridge has expanded to over 230 schools across Kenya and is aiming to reach an estimated 300,000 students by 2022 as its network expands.

OPIC’s efforts to support Impact Investing have helped exemplary projects like Bridge in recent years. By supporting private investors, Impact Investing creates social or environmental benefit while generating stable financial returns.

Schwab Foundation is an independent organization founded with the purpose to advance social entrepreneurship, innovation and progress. The foundation’s annual list of distinguished social entrepreneurs highlights exemplary projects.
