In Yaoundé, Cameroon, the OPIC-supported Magrabi ICO Cameroon Eye Institute provides affordable eye care and sight-saving cataract surgery to thousands. Blindness is twice as common in Africa as it is worldwide, and blindness caused by cataracts is often preventable. The Institute, the first nonprofit specialty eye hospital and training institute in Central Africa, was one of multiple OPIC-supported projects that an OPIC delegation to West Africa visited this week.
OPIC’s financing to the Magrabi facility was structured as a development impact loan, an innovative structure that links the financial and social performance of the project so that OPIC achieves a higher return when the hospital reaches more patients.
