Biden recognizes OPIC leadership in Caribbean clean energy efforts
Vice President Joe Biden highlighted OPIC’s work helping to introduce renewable energy to the Caribbean, when he spoke this week at an international energy summit. Biden highlighted OPIC’s support for a project to build the largest private-sector wind farm in Jamaica.
Jamaica, like many other Caribbean islands, depends heavily on imported fuel to meet its energy needs. The new 34-megawatt wind farm OPIC is helping to finance will help Jamaica reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and move toward its goal of generating 20 percent of its electricity from renewable resources by 2030.
Biden, who hosted the Caribbean Energy Security Summit in Washington, said the OPIC-supported wind plant is a tangible example of what can be achieved when the public and private sector … work together.
