In Zambia, healthy cattle graze on a local farm that has been able to improve animal health with the support of the Silverlands Fund, an OPIC partner that invests in a variety of agricultural businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa. By investing in vaccinations, dipping to prevent tick-borne illnesses, and more nutritious feedstock, Silverlands has been able to significantly reduce disease in local livestock and improve yields at livestock farms. OPIC provides financing and political risk insurance to Silverlands, which also employs livestock technicians to teach smallholder ranchers about animal health. This focus on healthier livestock has reduced cattle mortality and increased the number of healthy calves born. Improvements in livestock health have also helped local farmers increase their income.
