While telecommunications and Internet service are often taken for granted in the advanced economies, a large share of people in the developing world lack access to modern forms of communication, presenting both a great need and a significant opportunity for investors.

This cell tower in West Africa is one of many built by Cellcom Telecommunications Ltd., with the help of OPIC financing to Washington, DC-based Emerging Capital Partners, a majority U.S.-owned fund manager, which invests in African businesses across a range of sectors from agriculture to infrastructure and telecommunications. Cellcom is targeting some of the markets in West Africa with the lowest mobile phone penetration, including Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leon.
