Featured Photo: Building a supply chain to support Afghanistan’s wool producers

Nesar Nusraty, CEO of 2016 OPIC Impact Award winner American Wool and Cashmere, shows how wool produced by Afghan goat herders is sorted and de-haired before being shipped to market. American Wool of Beltsville, Maryland used OPIC financing to establish a delivery infrastructure so that wool produced in western Afghanistan could reach major export markets. By establishing a reliable supply chain, the company has helped ensure that the region’s herders earn steady income, which has helped create employment for 1,500 people.

Last week, at the 2016 OPIC Impact Awards for Excellence in Development, OPIC honored American Wool with the Impact Award in the Development Impact category.
