BMR Renewables: Helping Jamaica tap its wind resources

Print this Page

Country: Jamaica
Sector: Renewable energy:

Challenge: Like many Caribbean island nations, Jamaica depends on expensive imported fossil fuels for much of its electricity.

Idea: In 2014, OPIC committed a $43 million loan to support construction of a 36-megawatt wind farm, the country’s largest private-sector renewable energy project.

Impact: The plant will help Jamaica reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels and move toward its goal of generating 20% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.
