Print this Page

Country: Pakistan
Sector: Healthcare, infrastructure

Challenge: World Health Organization data show that Pakistan has just six hospital beds per 10,000 people, which is a fraction of the capacity of most industrialized nations.

Solution: OPIC provided a $30 million loan to the Aga Khan Hospital and Medical College Foundation to renovate and expand the facility with a new ambulatory care building; a neonatal, medical and pediatric intensive care unit; a center for innovation in medical education; a child care center; a new private wing that will subsidize healthcare to poorer patients; as well as the introduction of advanced equipment throughout.

Impact: In addition to improving the availability and quality of healthcare, the project will create hundreds of jobs.
