OPIC Announces Keynote Speaker for Expanding Horizons Small Business Workshop

Pacific Northwest workshop to be held October 3 at Grand Hyatt Seattle

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Peter Scott, considered one of the world’s leading experts in the design and application of biomass conserving technologies, will be keynote speaker at a small business workshop hosted by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, on October 3.
The workshop is designed to help SMEs in the Pacific Northwest learn how to gain access to lucrative emerging markets overseas with OPIC’s support.  Since its establishment in 1971, OPIC has committed $620 million in financing and political risk insurance to projects sponsored by companies in the Pacific Northwest – Washington State, Oregon and Idaho – supporting more than 4200 U.S. jobs and $755 million in U.S. exports.
Scott is Executive Director of BURN Design Lab and CEO of BURN Manufacturing Co. of Vashon, WA, which designs and manufactures high-quality, clean-burning cookstoves. Over the past 16 years, Scott has designed fuel-efficient technologies and trained producers in more than 20 countries; his trainees have constructed more than 400,000 stoves, bread ovens, food dryers, and tobacco curing systems. BURN is currently developing a factory in East Africa that will produce three million stoves in the next ten years.  
Scott's work has been featured in the New Yorker, and he was chosen as one of Foreign Policy Magazine's 100 Top Global Thinkers of 2010. 
OPIC’s Expanding Horizons workshop will outline for participants the innovative financial tools that OPIC has used for 40 years to help U.S. businesses successfully invest in emerging markets. Special emphasis will be placed on opportunities in the renewable energy and clean technology sectors, an OPIC priority.
Speakers will include senior government officials from OPIC, as well as from the Small Business Administration, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, the U.S. Department of Commerce, including the U.S. Commercial Service and the Minority Business Development Agency.

The event is the latest in a highly successful series that has educated nearly 2000 small and medium-sized business owners across the United States about OPIC products and services. Since 2006, OPIC has held Expanding Horizons events in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Newark, Houston, San Francisco, Boston, St. Louis, Denver, Philadelphia, Orange (CA), Raleigh, New Orleans and New York City.
