OPIC Announces Expanding Horizons Small Business Workshop in Phoenix

May 5, 2014

WASHINGTON – The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the U.S. Government’s development finance institution, will host an Expanding Horizons workshop for Arizona small businesses on Thursday, May 22, at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix, Arizona.

The workshop is designed to help small businesses learn more about the benefits of entering developing overseas markets and the ways OPIC and other U.S. Government agencies can support them. OPIC offers financing and political risk insurance to support U.S. businesses in challenging markets.

OPIC’s continued focus on small business is clear – in 2013, nearly 75% of the projects committed were with U.S. small and medium-sized businesses.

Michael Finney, PhD, Associate Professor of Global Management and Faculty Lead of the Emerging Markets Laboratories at Thunderbird School of Global Management is a scheduled guest speaker at the workshop. Additional speakers will include senior officials from OPIC, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Since its establishment in 1971, OPIC has committed more than $550 million in financing and political risk insurance to projects sponsored by companies in Arizona, supporting more than 1,247 local jobs and $342.5 million in exports from the state, a large share which has come from small businesses.

The Phoenix workshop is the latest in a highly successful series that has educated more than 2,500 small and medium-sized business owners across the United States about OPIC products and services. Since 2006, OPIC has held Expanding Horizons events in Atlanta, Boston, Charleston, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Fort Worth, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Newark, New Orleans, New York City, Orange (CA), Philadelphia, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, San Jose, St. Louis and Seattle.
